According to research conducted by researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, a certain type of bacterium that breeds in the Ganga was found to be more effective in treating severe human infections than some of the currently used antibiotics.

The researchers found that the new bacterium can replace some of the antibiotic drugs that have lost their potency in treating bloodstream urinary tract infections, severe burns, surgical sites, lung infections like pneumonia, bed sores, and diabetes infections.

The Ganga is considered a rich source of bacteriophages, and the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa present in the Ganga water can combat drug-resistant infections. Dr. Rama Chaudhry, Head of the Department, stated that antibiotics such as ceftazidine, imipenem, and amikacin had proved ineffective in treating infections.

A member of the research team, Dr. Nisha Rathor, stated that this new Ganga water bacterium has also been found to be non-harmful to the human immune system when compared with other antibiotic drugs that kill healthy body bacteria.
